Four thousand years ago a landslide closed the valley: it made the lake and emptied the settlement, which had been lived in since the neolithic. The lake is the second of the region by size and at its deepest reaches a hundred and twenty-three metres; Antonio Fogazzaro called it «a precious pearl», held in among the mountains.

On the shore there still stand the little forts the Austrians raised between 1802 and 1805 to stop the French, and which people here call Napoleon's forts. In 1852 the village counted a little over three hundred inhabitants; tourism began a dozen years later and by 1900 they had doubled. Among the guests came the king of the Belgians, Umberto Nobile and Alberto Moravia.
