Andalo

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,026 · Postal code: 38010

The little lake of Andalo is karstic and periodic: it has no visible inlet or outlet, and changes size with the rain. In spring, with the thaw, it reaches its greatest extent and the surplus water goes off towards the lake of Molveno through the rio Lambin. Around it runs a path of small white bricks, where in summer people walk and cycle and in winter ski cross-country, lit until late in the evening.

The village was a set of fourteen masi, each with its name: Pegorar, Doss, Monech, Toscana and the rest. The tourism of the second half of the twentieth century welded them into a single town, and now only Pegorar and Doss stay apart, in their fine position. Twice the Giro d'Italia has finished up here: in 1973 Eddy Merckx won, in 2016 Alejandro Valverde.
