Valfloriana

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 530 · Postal code: 38040

Valfloriana is a scattered municipality, eleven hamlets on the flanks of the valley with the town hall at Casatta; and two floods, three centuries apart, have remade it twice. In 1649 the water carried away the houses of Valle, which was the old Vallefloriana and the civil seat: nearly all those left homeless went down to Casatta, which has been in charge ever since, and a single family stopped a little further down and founded the hamlet still called Casanova. In 1966 the November flood emptied Ischiazza and Maso, which were evacuated: the people went to live in a new hamlet, Villaggio, and of the two villages only ruins remain, the church of the Exaltation of the Cross among them.

In the referendum of 1946 Valfloriana was the municipality in Italy that voted for the republic more than any other: 573 ballots against seventeen for the monarchy, more than ninety-seven per cent. The name comes from Saint Florian, the patron and titular of the parish church at Casatta, and in German the place was called Welschflorian, the Italian Florian. At carnival the matòci come out, with their masks carved in wood.
