Anterivo

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 383 · Postal code: 39040

A village of a few hundred people with four names: Anterivo in Italian, Altrei in German, Faltrui in the South Tyrolean dialect, Nantarù in the Trentino one. It is the only German-speaking comune in the Val di Fiemme, and yet its oldest name is Latin: in 1321 it was written Antereu, from in ante rivum, in front of the stream. That same year Duke Henry of Carinthia and Tyrol gave his magistrate at Egna the right to settle ten farmsteads here with Tyrolean colonists, and that is how German reached the east bank of the Adige.

Those ten farmsteads are still on the coat of arms, adopted in 1968: the shield is divided into ten fields, one for each. Around the village, on the other hand, the borders have moved a good deal. At the census of 1921, out of four hundred and two inhabitants only nine were recorded as Italian-speaking; in 1925 the comune was merged into Capriana and regained its autonomy only in 1948, the year it passed from the province of Trento to that of Bolzano. One of its two hamlets is called Guggal, that is, cuckoo.
