The Madonna del Parto was painted by Piero della Francesca for his mother, who came from here: her name was Romana di Perino da Monterchi. The fresco was in the chapel of Santa Maria di Momentana and now has a museum of its own, in the village.

The name comes from Mons Herculis, the mount of Hercules, and legend says it was he who founded the place after killing the Hydra: both are on the coat of arms. One street is called via Protoli, that is «before the tholos», the round temple that perhaps stood on the hill. The two strongest earthquakes ever recorded in the province of Arezzo happened here: the one on Christmas Day 1352 and the one of 26 April 1917. The town hall, rebuilt afterwards, is by Giovanni Michelucci.
