Monte Santa Maria Tiberina

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,216 · Postal code: 06010

Until 1815 this was a state of its own: the marquisate of Monte Santa Maria, an imperial fief of the Bourbon del Monte. The eldest member of the family ruled, whichever branch he came from, and the marquis minted his own coin, the montesca, worth about as much as the Florentine florin.

The imperial charter also granted asylum to men wanted elsewhere, and the campo franco: here you could fight a duel without risking excommunication, and there were three such places in Europe. In the marquises' palace remain the little balcony from which new laws were announced and the slot for anonymous denunciations. Until 1927 the comune belonged to the province of Arezzo; its 1,216 residents gather black truffles.
