Citerna

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,458 · Postal code: 06010

In the early 2000s, in the church of San Francesco, a terracotta Madonna and Child turned out to be a Donatello. The parish church holds two more, by Luca and by Andrea della Robbia.

All this art was brought by the Vitelli, who held Citerna in vicariate from the sixteenth century to the end of the seventeenth. From 23 to 26 July 1849 the town sheltered Garibaldi and his two thousand volunteers on their march towards the Adriatic. The earthquake of 1917 did damage, and in the Second World War the German army razed the fortress. The 3,458 residents have saved nearly everything else.
