One of the patrons of Rio is Saint Barbara, celebrated on 4 December: her patronage of miners recalls the town's mining history, tied for centuries to iron extraction on the island of Elba.
The town holds the Church of San Quirico, the Church of San Bennato and the Church of San Rocco, and overlooks the Rio Marina and Palmaiola lighthouses. The town's other patron, Saint James the Greater, is celebrated on 25 July.
