Massa Martana

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,822 · Postal code: 06056

In papal times it was simply Massa; the Martana was added by a royal decree of 29 March 1863, after the Vicus ad Martis, the Roman settlement that stood here on the Via Flaminia.

The consular road left stones and churches behind it: Santa Maria in Pantano, the abbey of San Faustino, that of Saints Fidenzio and Terenzio. The village, scarred by the earthquake of 1997, has been put back on its feet by restoration; you enter through a medieval gate, beside the sanctuary of the Madonna della Pace. The 3,822 residents make Colli Martani oil and nociata, the local walnut sweet.
