Castel Ritaldi

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,319 · Postal code: 06044

Castel Ritaldi spent a century defending its own name. In 1865 it risked being suppressed for being too small; in 1875 the town council said no to annexation by Montefalco, and that same year Castel San Giovanni was added to it. In 1927 it was wiped out all the same and reduced to a delegation of Spoleto: it became a comune again in 1932.

The name comes from the Ritaldi, a local feudal family. The church of Santa Marina belonged to the Benedictines, passed to the Augustinian hermits in 1321 and became a parish church only in 1818; inside are a fresco by Tiberio d'Assisi and a Madonna del Soccorso of 1509. The 3,319 residents live on a hill between Montefalco and Spoleto, and make oil.
