Montecastrilli

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 5,190 · Postal code: 05026

In 1543 Pope Paul III, on his way back to Rome from Todi, stopped here for the night in the house of count Giovanni di Offreduccio Atti: with him came seven cardinals and an escort of 1,400 mounted lances.

That same year another Atti, don Siro, left all his goods to the town so that it would have a public school: the charitable foundation bearing his name is recorded until 1936. The place name seems to come from Montes Carsulis, that is from nearby Carsulae, the Roman post on the Via Flaminia. An autonomous comune since 1817, it now has 5,190 residents scattered between the main town and the old castles of the Terre Arnolfe.
