Acquasparta

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 4,929 · Postal code: 05021

In the early seventeenth century the refounded Accademia dei Lincei had its seat here, and Galileo was a guest at Palazzo Cesi. Behind it all was duke Federico Cesi, founder of the Lincei, who lies in the church of Santa Cecilia, on the street that carries their name.

The palace was begun in 1561 by Gian Giacomo Cesi and his wife Isabella, to a design by the Florentine Guidetto Guidetti; the work ended around 1579. The town's name comes from the Latin ad Aquas Partas, after the Amerino and Furapane springs. In June the 4,929 residents split into three contrade for the Renaissance festival, which closes with a game of goose in the square.
