Giano dell'Umbria

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 3,816 · Postal code: 06030

In the early sixteenth century Leo X granted the town in lordship to Severio Minervio, of Spoleto. The inhabitants would have none of it: they refused to recognise him and bought their freedom back with a substantial sum.

The name is said to come from a temple of Janus. At Toccioli, on the old line of the Via Flaminia, a Roman villa is being excavated, some of its rooms still frescoed; above the town stands the abbey of San Felice, Spoletan Romanesque of the twelfth century. And then there is Frigolandia, the micronation founded by Vincenzo Sparagna, with its museum of Arte Maivista: inside are the magazines of Italian underground comics, Cannibale, Il Male, Frigidaire, the ones Yale wanted for its collections. The 3,816 residents make oil and wine.

Saint Felix, patron of a Romanesque abbey in the Spoleto style

📅 Every year, on 30 October

Giano dell'Umbria celebrates Saint Felix on 30 October; the medieval abbey dedicated to him was built in the 12th century following the typical canons of Spoleto Romanesque style and enlarged in the 16th century to its current appearance.
