Saint Benedict was born in Norcia on 2 March 480, and he is the patron of the town where he came into the world before he was patron of all Europe: founder of the order that bears his name, father of Western monasticism, today the principal patron of the continent.
Norcia celebrates him twice: on 21 March, the day he died at Montecassino in 547, and on 11 July. The basilica dedicated to him stands on the town's main square.
