Feast of Saint Rita
📅 Every year, on 22 May
On 22 May Cascia celebrates Saint Rita, the Augustinian nun born at Roccaporena who for fifteen years, tradition says, bore a thorn driven into her forehead.
On the arms of Cascia there is a nymph: Porrina, healer, snake charmer, herbalist and seer. She had foretold that a flower would be born at Roccaporena, and in that village, in 1380, Margherita Lotti was born: Saint Rita.
In the Middle Ages Cascia was a republic and came to control more than forty castles; Pope Clement VIII granted it the title of city in 1596. The ground shakes here: the earthquake of January 1703 killed more than seven hundred people. From 1926 to 1968 the railway to Spoleto and Norcia ran through; its bed is now a cycle path. The 3,248 residents live in the Valnerina, on the border with Lazio.
