Cerreto di Spoleto

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,122 · Postal code: 06041

The Crusca dictionary, in 1612, explained that charlatans are called ciarlatani after Cerreto: it was from here that the men came who sold ointments and medicines in the squares, pulled teeth and performed sleight of hand, living off make-believe.

The town's name, though, comes from the turkey oaks of the woods around it. The first records are from the early thirteenth century and speak of a Lombard castrum with watchtowers guarding the trade roads; in the sixteenth century, once the wars were over, some of those towers became stone quarries. In 1446 Cerreto passed to the Papal State. On the arms two bears hold up a tree above a three-arched bridge. The 1,122 residents live among the woods that gave the town its name.
