Poggiodomo

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 135 · Postal code: 06040

Poggiodomo is one of the least populous comuni in Italy: 135 residents, at a thousand metres, perched on a rock spur. Precisely because it is out of the way, plenty of people have come here to hide: monks, hermits, Ghibellines and, in the Second World War, partisans.

The castle entered the Duchy of Spoleto early on, then the village passed to Cascia, from 1361, and to Leonessa. It became a comune in 1809, under Napoleon, splitting from Cascia, and stayed one even after the pope came back. The three hamlets, Usigni, Roccatamburo and Mucciafora, stand lined up one after another along the slope, among the beech and manna-ash woods that look down on the Tissino valley.
