Foligno

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 56,045 · Postal code: 06034

Locals joke that Foligno sits "at the centre of the world" — it certainly sits at the centre of Umbria, on flat ground, a rarity: hence its long life as a city of roads, printers and trade. Here in 1472 appeared the first printed edition of Dante's Divine Comedy, a primacy its printing museum claims with pride.

Twice a year, in June and September, the Giostra della Quintana brings the seventeenth century back: ten districts, six hundred costumed figures and riders spearing ever-smaller rings. Palazzo Trinci with its Gothic frescoes is the artistic surprise; the spring-fed hamlet of Rasiglia lies twenty minutes away.
