The people of Foligno joke that they live «at the centre of the world» — at the centre of Umbria they certainly do, and on flat ground too, which is rare hereabouts: that is why Foligno has always been a city of roads, printers and trade. Here, in 1472, the first printed edition of the Divine Comedy came out, a distinction the printing museum claims with pride.
The town lies entirely on the plain, but the comune is almost all mountain, and Italy's watershed runs inside its boundaries: the uplands of Colfiorito send their water to the Adriatic, everything else to the Tiber and the Tyrrhenian. It ranges from the little over a thousand metres of the hamlet of Curasci to the under two hundred of Budino. Twice a year, in June and in September, the Giostra della Quintana brings the seventeenth century back to town: ten districts, six hundred costumed figures and riders spearing ever smaller rings. Palazzo Trinci, with its Gothic frescoes, is the artistic surprise; Rasiglia of the springs is twenty minutes away.

Foligno celebrates Saint Felician on 24 January; born in Forum Flamini, now San Giovanni Profiamma, he was the town's first bishop and died a martyr during the persecutions of Decius in 250, after an episcopate lasting 56 years.
