Spoleto

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 38,429 · Postal code: 06049

In 1958 Gian Carlo Menotti went looking for a theatre-city and found it: ever since, the Festival of Two Worlds has made Spoleto each summer the world capital of the arts, its cathedral square turned into stalls beneath the façade where Filippo Lippi frescoed his final work. The Ponte delle Torri, a medieval aqueduct eighty metres above the ravine, is the walk that steals breath.

The Albornoz fortress rules over all; the Lombard basilica of San Salvatore is UNESCO-listed. Spoleto is that rare case of a small city with international stature — black truffle at zero kilometres included.
