Allerona

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,859 · Postal code: 05011

On the third Sunday of May the Pugnaloni come out, carts showing scenes of work in the fields and the miracle of Saint Isidore, the saint who prays while an angel ploughs for him. The name comes from the pungolo, the goad used to drive the oxen.

Allerona is the westernmost comune of Umbria and touches two other regions, Lazio and Tuscany; the 1,859 residents live between the Paglia valley and the Valdichiana. The town's name comes instead from the strawberry tree of the woods around it: the arms carry two crossed branches of it, under a stag. On 28 January 1944 an Allied bombing hit a train of prisoners of war standing here: more than four hundred were killed.
