Fabro

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,906 · Postal code: 05015

A couple of million years ago this land was the floor of the Tyrrhenian sea: walking among the clay ridges you still find fossil shells, pecten, oysters, tusk shells. Water then carved out the calanchi, the badlands, which never keep the same shape.

In the mid-nineteenth century two Etruscan copper ingots turned up here, of the fifth century BC, one decorated with a dry branch and the other with a fish bone: they ended up in Florence, in the collection of marquis Strozzi. In 1925 the seventeenth milestone of the Via Traiana Nova was found, counting the miles from Bolsena. The town appears in documents in June 1118; today it has 2,906 residents and an exclave, Poggiovalle.
