Feast of Saint Eumenius
📅 Every year, on 18 September
On 18 September Ficulle celebrates Saint Eumenius; in summer the village also hosts the Ficulle In Rock Festival, in the natural amphitheatre of the public park.
The name most likely comes from figulus, the potter: terracotta has always been worked at Ficulle. On the coat of arms, though, there is a fig tree, because for centuries people believed the town came from Ficulea in the Sabine country.
The Romans kept a lookout post here on the Via Traiana: from that time survives a marble cippus dedicated to Mithras, now in the church of Santa Maria Vecchia. The Camaldolese abbey of San Nicola al Monte Orvietano hosted the monk Gratian, the man of the Decretum, who taught at Bologna. From 1416 Ficulle followed Orvieto into the Papal State. The walls and the two fortresses remain; the 1,695 residents make wine, oil and still pots.
