Alviano

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,514 · Postal code: 05020

After the death of Bartolomeo d'Alviano, the condottiero born here, his wife Pantasilea Baglioni had a Madonna and Child with saints painted in the church, perhaps with a portrait of her husband. Pordenone signed it: one of the very few works of his that are certain in central Italy.

The stronghold was built in 996 by count Offredo, who had come from Germany with Otto III, and from him came the Alviano line. The castle you see today is fifteenth-century: inside are the museum of peasant life and the museum of the condottieri. In 1963 a dam on the Tiber created the lake, now a WWF reserve. The 1,514 residents make oil.
