Lugnano in Teverina

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 1,539 · Postal code: 05020

In 1229 the people of Lugnano built the convent of San Francesco on the spot where, so the story goes, the saint had pulled a child from the jaws of a wolf with the help of a goose.

The collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta is of the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and inside are cosmatesque mosaics and a Crucifixion of the Giottesque school. Palazzo Pennone, now the town hall, owes its name neither to a ship's yardarm nor to the cardinals of legend, but to its first owner, Antonio Penone. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries the village had a factory making electric light bulbs. At the Roman villa of Poggio Gramignano archaeologists have dug an infant cemetery. The 1,539 residents make oil.
