The patron saint of Arrone is Saint John the Baptist, celebrated on 24 June with the traditional procession. The 14th-century church dedicated to him holds 15th-century frescoes of the Umbrian school.
The town takes its name from a Roman nobleman, Arrone, who in the late 9th century settled in the Valnerina and took possession of one of the valley's rocky promontories, building a fortified castle there, first in wood and later rebuilt in masonry: it was the town's first nucleus. The upper part of the town, the castle, still preserves its medieval urban layout, with walls and alleys, as well as the civic bell tower, the "olive" tower and the 16th-century parish church of Santa Maria Assunta; at Christmas time, precisely at the old castle, a living nativity scene is staged.
