Scheggino

Province: Perugia · Region: Umbria · Population: 481 · Postal code: 06040

On 23 July 1522 the neighbouring castles attacked Scheggino while the men were out in the fields: it was the women and the boys left in the village who drove them off. Every year, on that day, the Festa delle Donne repeats the story.

The village had been built in the twelfth century by the Duchy of Spoleto as an outpost, and plenty of people fought over it since; the walls and a half-ruined tower remain. In the apse of the church of San Nicola are the frescoes begun by Giovanni di Pietro, known as lo Spagna, and finished by his assistants: the Coronation of the Virgin, as in the cathedral of Spoleto. The 481 residents have the truffle museum and the museum of the fairy tale.
