Avigliano Umbro

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 2,568 · Postal code: 05020

In 1237 the army of Todi destroyed Avigliano and killed most of its inhabitants, because the castle wanted to stand on its own. Two centuries later it was the pope who forced Todi to rebuild the walls; above Porta Vecchia an eagle still shelters two eaglets under its wings: Todi with Amelia and Terni.

Avigliano became a comune in its own right only in 1975, splitting from Montecastrilli. The theatre was built by the townspeople in the 1920s, with a Liberty façade, and opened in 1928. In the early 1990s Mogol set up his music school here. The 2,568 residents live on the hill of San Rocco, where the old Via Amerina ran.
