San Gemini

Province: Terni · Region: Umbria · Population: 4,921 · Postal code: 05029

The saint who gives the town its name came from Syria: Yemin, son of the general Miliziano, fled by sea as far as Fano and died at Ferento in 815. After the Saracen raids the inhabitants moved higher up, carried his body with them and took his name.

Autonomy came with Innocent III: the privilege of 27 August 1198 is recorded by an inscription on the church of San Giovanni Battista. The town, closed inside two rings of walls on the old Via Flaminia, exempted artists from taxes for five years to attract them. Not far off lie the ruins of Carsulae, and the 4,921 residents are known above all for their mineral water.
