Saint John the Baptist, patron of Cison di Valmarino

Cison di Valmarino celebrates Saint John the Baptist on 24 June, in the shadow of Castelbrando.
In 1337, when the vicar general of the bishop of Ceneda invested the Caminesi with the fief of Valmareno, the keys of the fief were handed over in a ceremony that was performed three times, in three different places: at the castle of Costa di Cison, at the house called Mons Albanus, and at the parish church. Those three buildings were the three powers of the valley — the garrison, the government and the church — and the repetition says that in law and in symbol they weighed the same. In 1349 the castle and the curia of Valmareno were sold to Marin Faliero, who gave the military watch to a captain and the civil administration to a gastaldo — rents, tithes, tolls and justice, criminal justice included — and the gastaldo, a notary called Enrico della Valmareno, was under obligation to live in the Palacium of Montalban and to keep it in repair. The palace did not last: it was almost certainly destroyed, in February 1383, by two hundred Paduans of Francesco da Carrara, who camped in the valley for three days, burned all the houses, besieged the castle of Costa and went away only after breaking down its gate and its belfries.
On the eighteenth of February 1436 the doge Francesco Foscari entrusted this territory to two condottieri who had fought for Venice, Erasmo da Narni — the Gattamelata — and Brandolino da Bagnacavallo. But the counts were bound to pay a heavy tax on the feudal rights, and in 1439 the Gattamelata gave up: he renounced his rights and left the whole lordship to his colleague. Brandolino's descendants, called the Brandolini and later the Brandolini D'Adda, held the Valmareno until 1797, when Napoleon brought down the Serenissima. The name of the village is made of two halves and the second is recent: Cison is an augmentative of cesa, cisa, that is a hedge, a coppice wood and also cleared ground; Valmarino was added by royal decree of the tenth of November 1867, to recall that this had been the seat of the county of Valmareno, and it is valle plus mara, a Gaulish word for a marshy place that turns up everywhere in Venetian place names. Cison stands towards the end of the Vallata, and its hills lie within the Prosecco hills that UNESCO has listed as world heritage.
