Tarzo

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,583 · Postal code: 31020

Tarzo has 4,583 inhabitants in the hills of the upper Treviso country, between the lakes of Revine and the road to Vittorio Veneto. The name appears for the first time in 1031, written "Tarçe", and comes from the name of a Roman landowner, Tartius. That there were people here long before is shown by a Bronze Age sword found in 1923 and the remains of a pile-dwelling village that came to light in 1987 at Colmaggiore. But the shape of the comune is owed to the Lombards, who arrived in 568: it was they who founded the small communities of Tarzo, Corbanese, Arfanta, Fratta and Colmaggiore, which have been named together in the documents ever since.

The rest is told by the coat of arms. There is a mitre, because from 1307 Tarzo was tied to the bishopric of Ceneda and was a vice-county of it until 1769: its statutes were given to it directly by the bishop, from the fifteenth century on. There are two stars, which perhaps stand for the two powers — civil and religious — that the bishop-count held together, or perhaps for the Da Camino, who were the lords here before him. And there is a blue band for the lakes of Revine, which carry the name of the neighbouring comune but lie half inside the territory of Tarzo.
