San Pietro di Feletto

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 5,355 · Postal code: 31020

San Pietro di Feletto has 5,355 inhabitants on the morainic hills north-west of Conegliano, covered by prosecco vineyards. It is a scattered comune: the seat is not in the village that gives it its name, but at Rua di Feletto. The place name comes from the Latin filix, fern, and says what the land was like before the vines. Above everything stands the pieve of San Pietro, one of the oldest in the Marca Trevigiana, with a medieval porch sheltering five frescoes, among them the Sunday Christ.

Inside, over three naves, the frescoes run from the twelfth to the fifteenth century, and the apse basin is wholly taken up by a Christ Pantocrator between the Virgin and Saint Peter. At Rua, in 1670, a great Camaldolese hermitage arose, later suppressed by Napoleon: four cells remain of it, the refectory and the almshouse, which today houses the town hall. The pieve, meanwhile, has ended up on the municipal coat of arms.
