On the UNESCO prosecco hills, Conegliano is the school-city of Italian wine: Italy's first oenological school opened here in 1876 and still teaches, and from here runs the Prosecco Road inaugurated in 1966, the country's first wine route. The castle overlooks an elegant centre of porticoes and frescoed façades along Contrada Granda.
In the cathedral, the altarpiece by Giambattista Cima — "Cima da Conegliano", born here, honoured with a house-museum — bathes the scene in Venetian light. Every weekend, the Cartizze hills serve Italy's most vertical aperitivo.
