From here the via Alemagna branched off, the one heading for Dobbiaco, which in its turn branched from the via Norica. The territory had already been centuriated by the Romans; then it passed to the Lombards and, when they were beaten by the Franks in 774, it became a fief of the bishop-count of Ceneda, under the jurisdiction of the pieve of San Fior. In 1170 it followed the fortunes of Conegliano and passed under the comune of Treviso. Medieval documents count it in «regole»: one of 1261 lists which belonged to the eighth centenaro — Santo Stefano, San Giorgio and San Nicolò di Montesella, San Vendemiano, Cosniga, Saccon and Fossamerlo — and which to the sixth; another, of 1314, names the regole of San Vendemiano, Crusniga, Lacere, Fossamerlo and Zoppé, still under San Fior. The comune in its present form was instituted on 4 April 1861.

Villa Lippomano stands on a vine-covered hill at Monticella, on the boundary with Conegliano: two tree-lined avenues climb to the top, where the seventeenth-century building rises which tradition attributes to Baldassarre Longhena and which has inside a ballroom richly worked in stucco and fresco. At the other end of the comune, at Zoppé, the landscape of the palù survives, full of spring water, though the passage of the A27 motorway has damaged it. And from the youth side of the village's football club, founded in 1966, came the best-known player San Vendemiano has produced: Alessandro Del Piero.
