Santa Lucia di Piave

Province: Treviso · Region: Veneto · Population: 9,081 · Postal code: 31025

In the Middle Ages this village was called Sub Silva, under the wood, for the great forest that covered it; the name Santa Lucia was given to it in 1312, when it stood under the counts of Collalto of the castle of San Salvatore. With the name, or perhaps before it, came the fair: the Fiera di Santa Lucia has its first documentary trace in the statutes of the Comune of Treviso of 1313, though some historians take the market back to around 661. It was a fair of horses, donkeys and oxen, of sheep and pigs, and a trade in hemp and wool, and it worked because of where it stood: beside the Ongaresca, one of the great communication roads of the time, and beside the ford of Lovadina, the most accessible point for crossing the Piave and an obliged pass between the north and the south of Europe. Once it was held on the octave of All Saints; then it was moved to 13 December, and from a commercial event it became a religious feast as well.

The parish church, inaugurated in 1878, is neo-Gothic, has an organ built in 1882 by the Veronese organ maker Gaetano Zanfretta and a bell tower of 1926 seventy-six metres high, which is practically a copy of the one at Bannia di Fiume Veneto. Inside it was decorated in the nineteen thirties under the guidance of the architect Domenico Rupolo and almost entirely by artists of the village, grown up around the parish priest Vittorio Morando, who held the parish from 1910 to 1965 and made of it a real nursery. Among them the blessed Claudio Granzotto, born here in 1900, sculptor and friar, who signed the porch, the holy water font and the statue of Saint Lucy that stands today in the comune's coat of arms, granted in 2012. Then there is the Filanda of the Ancillotto family: born in the eighteen hundreds to work hemp and flax into ropes for the port market of Venice, in 1907 it became, with new machinery, an important silk industry, and it closed in 1956. Today those buildings host exhibitions and fairs.
