Soave

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 6,908 · Postal code: 37038

The name has nothing to do with the adjective: it probably comes from the Suaves, that is the Suebi, written Soavi in old Italian, who settled here after the invasions. A bull of pope Eugene the Third, in 1145, calls the place Suavium, land of the Soavi. The castle appears in the documents in 934, the time when the Magyars were coming down into western Europe; the walls you still see today were built by Cansignorio della Scala in 1379.

Cansignorio again, in 1375, had the palace of justice built in piazza Antenna, and it was paid for by the twenty-two villages that depended on the captaincy of Soave: their names are on a plaque on the front, the largest of all the Scaliger ones. The wine that carries the name of the town is made on the hills above it, at the foot of the Lessini.
