Colognola ai Colli

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,141 · Postal code: 37030

The pieve of Santa Maria stands where a pagan temple once was, and it has not forgotten: inside the church two Roman stones are kept, one bearing a dedication to Mercury and the other to Apollo. Pope Eugene III mentions it as early as 1145; the building you see today, however, is seventeenth-century.

Colognola is a scattered municipality: the main settlement is called Monte, but the town hall is in the hamlet of Villa. The hills give Soave and Valpolicella, and in May the village celebrates the dwarf Verdone pea with the Sagra dei Bisi, which has been going for more than half a century: risi e bisi, lasagne with peas, and even pea-flavoured ice cream.
