Zimella

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,834 · Postal code: 37040

Zimella has 4,834 inhabitants in the plain between Verona and Vicenza, and it is a comune sparso: the town hall is not in Zimella, which nonetheless gives it its name, but in the hamlet of Santo Stefano. From 1405 the area belonged to Venice, which put it in the Distretto del Dogato, answering directly to the sestiere of Dorsoduro: that is why a country comune has villa Cornaro, villa Donà delle Rose and villa Morosini. The comune in today's shape was set up in 1807 by Eugène de Beauharnais, viceroy and adopted son of Napoleon.

The fourth hamlet, Bonaldo, has a story of its own: under the Italian cadastre it found itself divided between three different comuni, Arcole, Veronella and Zimella. Putting it back together took two referendums a quarter of a century apart: in 1981 the part that belonged to Veronella passed to Zimella, in 2007 the part that belonged to Arcole. There is also a choice that says a great deal about how the place works: the civic feast of the comune is the eighth of September, because each hamlet was left its own patron saint.
