Sandrigo

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,392 · Postal code: 36066

In 1432 a Venetian ship commanded by Pietro Querini was wrecked at Røst, in the Lofoten islands, and came home with the dried cod that the north had been eating for centuries. Five and a half centuries later, in 1987, the Confraternity of the Bacalà was founded in Sandrigo itself, to defend the Vicenza recipe: since then the town has been considered the home of baccalà and devotes a two-week festival to it.

There is something else worth remembering, though. During the war twenty-eight Jewish refugees were interned at Sandrigo, twenty adults and eight youngsters. When the Germans arrived, on 10 September 1943, they all left together and headed south, towards the Allies. They made it: every one of them survived to the Liberation.
