Feast of Saint Brice
📅 Every year, on 13 November
On 13 November Avise celebrates Saint Brice, the bishop of Tours who, falsely accused, carried burning coals in his mitre to Saint Martin's tomb without being burned.
The village's name comes from the motto of the barons of Avise: «Qui tost Avise, tart se repent», whoever warns early repents late. It is written on the castle, a warning to anyone passing.
The d'Avise were among the few Aosta Valley nobles who never had to submit to the Savoy, and within a few hundred metres they built three castles. The village of 348 residents juts out on a rock above the Pierre-Taillée gorge, where the passage was defended by two drawbridges, a guardhouse and a gate: Horace-Bénédict de Saussure describes it in his Voyage dans les Alpes. At Runaz a stretch of the via delle Gallie is still cut into the rock.
