Saint-Nicolas

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 315 · Postal code: 11010

Before it took the saint's name, this terrace was called Cyvoix, «this side of the voice»: opposite lay Voix, the voice, today's Rhêmes-Saint-Georges, because of the echo bouncing off the walls of the Rhêmes valley. Even the Greek name of the valley, Rhêma, means the same thing.

Jean-Baptiste Cerlogne was born here, the abbot who wrote the first grammar and the first dictionary of the Valdôtain patois; at Fossaz-Dessus stands the Centre d'études francoprovençales. In 1869, near the church, a Neolithic necropolis came to light: two bracelets were found in its cist tombs. Below the village of 315 residents the Gaboé torrent has carved badlands up to forty metres high, the earth pyramids.
