Arvier

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 892 · Postal code: 11011

Up in the Valgrisenche, above Arvier, stands the fortified house of Planaval: the highest of all the fortified houses in the Aosta Valley. Lower down the comune counts two more, the castle of La Mothe, from the late thirteenth century, and the castle of Arvier at Grand-Haury.

The medieval village sits at 780 metres on the floor of the Dora Baltea valley, fourteen kilometres from Aosta. The parish church of San Sulpizio has a Romanesque bell tower; the chapel of Rochefort stands on a crag looking over the valley, where the remains of the castle of the same name were still visible in the nineteenth century. The 892 residents also have the hamlet of Léverogne, where the Middle Ages mix with more recent building.
