Rhêmes-Saint-Georges

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 196 · Postal code: 11010

The chimney sweeps of this valley had a language of their own: an argot grafted onto the patois, good for understanding one another and for not being understood by anyone else. Even today the patois of Rhêmes-Saint-Georges does not sound like the neighbours'.

In 1972, in the village of Cachoz, a late Bronze Age hoard came to light. The parish church of San Giorgio, at Vieux, is fifteenth-century and stands on the remains of an older one: inside are Bohemian crystal chandeliers and a carved Valsesian altar, and in 2006 Benedict XVI prayed here. The 196 residents live in the Rhêmes valley, inside the Gran Paradiso national park.

Saint George, the patron who gave the municipality its name

📅 Every year, on 23 April

Rhêmes-Saint-Georges celebrates Saint George on 23 April; the municipality, once simply called Voix for the echo of the valley walls, took the name of its patron around 1400, as also happened with neighbouring Saint-Nicolas.
