Feast of Saint Blaise
📅 Every year, on 3 February
On 3 February Villeneuve celebrates Saint Blaise; and there is an evening when the winegrowers open the barmé, the cellars dug into the crevices of the landslide the village stands on.
The castle of Châtel-Argent was built around 1275 for the House of Savoy, and its designer was the architect James of Saint Georges. Some derive the name from a mint said to have stood there; in any case the place name Castrum Argenteum was already in use around 1175.
The spur it stands on had been occupied long before: in Salassian and then Roman times a fortification watched the valley from here, and excavations in the 1980s also identified an early Christian liturgical complex. On the plain below the village, in 1917, twenty-five Copper Age tombs came to light. The 1,236 residents also have a stretch of the via delle Gallie at Champrotard.
