Feast of the Assumption
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Bard celebrates its patron, Saint Mary of the Assumption, in the church dedicated to her: the feast of a village of one hundred and twenty-five people below the fort.
There is no lion on the coat of arms but a fish: the barbel, bar in French, punning on the name of the village and on that of its lords. This is the smallest comune in the Aosta Valley, 125 residents.
The nineteenth-century fort stands on the rock spur where the valley narrows to its tightest point and the Dora swings sharply: the Roman via delle Gallie ran through here, and anyone wanting into the valley had no alternative. Below, the medieval village still has its fifteenth- and sixteenth-century houses — Casa del Vescovo, Casa della Meridiana — and the eighteenth-century palace of the Nicole, last counts of Bard. Near the fort are rock carvings and the women's slide.
