Saint Martin and the lard festival
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Arnad celebrates Saint Martin; on the last weekend of August, instead, comes the Féhta dou lar, the Lard d'Arnad festival.
At the entrance to the hamlet of Machaby lies a smoothed stone the locals call the women's slide, or guiata: the fertility stone, tied to Celtic magic rituals, with rock inscriptions around it. A little higher, at the sanctuary of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges, the feast of the Madonna of the Snows is still kept on 5 August.
The comune climbs from the valley floor through hillside vineyards up to the col de La Cou, and counts two castles, the upper one and the Vallaise, plus the fortified houses of La Costa and Ville. The bridge of Echallod, on the Via Francigena coming from Verrès, has been crossable only on foot since the flood of 2000. Between Perloz and Arnad's 1,294 residents run the peony paths, protecting a species rare in the valley.
