Pontboset

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 195 · Postal code: 11020

In 1939 the fascist regime renamed the village Pianboseto, and got it wrong twice over: pian- does not translate pont-, and here the bridges are what counts. The stone ones over the Ayasse, still in place, were built in the seventeenth century.

They were wanted by count Jean-Jacques Nicole de Bard, who in the same years opened a foundry at Fabrique: people called it the nail factory. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the nobles of Bard; in 1682 it was granted in fief to the Freydoz. The 195 residents live in the Champorcher valley, along the Ayasse.

Saint Gratus, patron at the heart of a small Aosta Valley village

📅 Every year, on 7 September

Pontboset celebrates Saint Gratus on 7 September, in the parish church dedicated to him, located at the centre of the village; the municipality also preserves the sanctuary of Retempio, a place of devotion in the lower Aosta Valley.
