Hône

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,175 · Postal code: 11020

It is the only comune in Italy whose name begins with an H. Hône sits at the mouth of the Champorcher valley, on flat ground but ringed by mountains, with the fort of Bard above it serving as both roof and horizon.

People lived here in the Bronze and Iron Ages, as the cup-marked stones and the balme, shelters cut into the rock, make clear; in 2015 a dig near the parish church of San Giorgio turned up protohistoric pottery and successive reoccupations down to Roman times. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the lords of Bard, vassals of the Vallaise and the Savoy. The Via Francigena still runs through the old centre of its 1,175 residents, arriving from Arnad and heading on to Bard.
