Feast of the Assumption
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Issogne celebrates its patron, Saint Mary of the Assumption, in the parish church dedicated to her.
In the middle of the castle courtyard stands a wrought-iron fountain shaped like a pomegranate: the finest thing Issogne owns, so much so that the village put it on its coat of arms. The town grew up around that castle, and the castle is the work of Giorgio di Challant, prior of Sant'Orso and canon of the primatial church of Lyon.
Before the Challant, the seigneury depended on the bishops of Aosta, held jointly with the lords of Verrès: they granted the first charter of franchises around the middle of the thirteenth century, the oldest evidence that the community existed. The main village sits at 387 metres on the right bank of the Dora; above it opens the Brenve valley. The land of its 1,396 residents is largely forest.
