Gignod

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,692 · Postal code: 11010

In the twentieth century a hoard of 600 imperial coins turned up under the meadows of Gignod, buried around the second half of the third century. Not far off, at Roinçod, a cist tomb of stone slabs held two skeletons and a soapstone vase: the via delle Gallie ran through here, and it shows.

The comune stretches between the Valpelline and the valley of the Great St Bernard. The first is known locally as the Coumba fréda, the cold valley, and in winter it earns the name. In 1252 the Savoy took the territory and granted it to the lords of Quart, who held it until 1378; in 1584 they turned it into a barony that reached as far as two districts of Aosta. Today its 1,692 residents are scattered among the hamlets.

Saint Hilary, the plague procession and the Landzette

📅 Every year, on 13 January

The patron of Gignod is Saint Hilary, on 13 January; on 16 August, instead, people climb to the Punta Chaligne, 2608 metres, to give thanks for surviving the 17th-century plague.
