Etroubles

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 496 · Postal code: 11014

On 20 May 1800 Napoleon slept here, in the house of abbé Léonard Veysendaz, having come down from the Great St Bernard on his way to Marengo with 35,000 infantry and gunners and 5,000 cavalry. Five days earlier, on the slopes of the Tête de Crêtes, general Rohan's Croats had placed a cannon: in June 1914 skeletons with pierced skulls were found there.

In Roman times the village was called Restapolis and was the main settlement of the valley, probably the winter camp of the garrison of the pass. The present name comes instead from étrobbla, the stubble left after the harvest. The 496 residents have the first cooperative dairy in the Aosta Valley, dating from 1853, and at Éternod the last oven for the traditional black bread, still lit on special occasions.
